| Sandblasted Recycled Glass
The workshop is placed in the outskirts of Bulawayo, the southern part of Zimbabwe. Seven men and women work with old bottles and off cuts from the glas production, turning it into the most fabulous wine glas, water glas, vases, candleholders, bowls and plates in all sizes.
The used windows are being cut, egdes polished, painted in original patterns inspired by the Ndebele culture and in the end sandblasted. Bottles are being cut and turned up side down and put on its base and - out comes the most amasing wine glasses. The artisans are very skilled and experienced handling glass.
The raw materiales is cheap and relatively easy to come by from the areas shops and restaurants. Visitors from South Africa are often carring special bottles from there and it its nearly a sport between family and friends to find the most amasing bottles in the containers.
Some of the most spectacular bottles keep their neck intact and becomes water bottles - as you can see on our shelves at House by the Sea.
The workshop is initiated by women years ago and run by a team headed by a very creative woman. She has taken the recycled glass further, and are making mirrors decorated with mosaics and mosaic decorated bowls and jewellery with silver framed glass pendants.
Recycling of bottles turned into drinking glasses has been used ealier by the poor people, before the plastic and zink cups was available. |
